This is a categorized list of the Flash experiments available for view on this site. Email me if you are interested in more information about the experiments, or if you would like access to the source code.
The Kingdom of Hammurabi
This is the first game I have completed, start to finish. It is a simple economic simulation, based on the first computer game I ever played, back around 1980.
Finished Game
Whirling Vector Shapes of Doom
This is a 75% completed simple arcade game, created in Flash 7/Actionscript 1.
Current Prototype
Gyruss Clone
This is my attempt to re-make one of my favorite 1980s video games.
Iteration 1
Iteration 2
Iteration 3
Scorched Earth
This is a series of ongoing experiments to recreate, in Flash, the Mother of All Games: Scorched Earth. I am attempting to update the game to be in Isometric format and allow for multiple viewing angles. The links I post are to be regular updates to examples of my progress until the game is done.
Perlin Noise and the BitmapData Threshold
Isometric view in wireframe mode
Isometric view in fill mode
Isometric view in fill mode, with rotation. Warning: This one is quite processor-intensive.
Isometric view in fill mode, with rotation. This one is better optimized than the previous, and a little more interactive.
Parallax Sprite
This is another ongoing experiment. I am using layered graphics and the parallax effect to provide the illusion of depth in a top-down setting.
Iteration 1 – Actionscript 3, June 2007
Iteration 2 – Actionscript 3, June 2007
Iteration 3 – Actionscript 3, July 2007
Iteration 4 – Actionscript 3, September 2007
Cellular Automata Explorer
This is an interactive Cellular Automata explorer, using a ruleset based on information in Stephen Wolfram’s book, A New Kind of Science.
Cellular Automata Explorer – Actionscript 1, January 2003
Langton’s Ants
This was my second experiment with Cellular Automata. At around iteration 10,000, some interesting patterns begin to emerge from the apparently random output.
Langton’s Ants – Actionscript 1, January 2003
Biomorphs
This is the beginning of my take on Richard Dawkins’ Biomorph Explorer software from his book The Blind Watchmaker
Biomorph 1 – Actionscript 1, June 2004
Pattern Ghost – experimenting with Actionscript 3 and trigonometry I
Fire simulation using the Blur Filter
This is an experiment which ended up being used at work for a demo for a client.
Trigonometron – Trigonometry and programming experiment which explores various formulae for describing curves. Actionscript 1, 2003
Bitmap Circle – My first exploration of Flash 8 and the Bitmap drawing functionality introduced in that version of the program. Actionscript 2, 2005
Spinning Chad Head – This was a stress-test to see how Flash 8 handled multiple levels of transparency over a complex background. I think it is kind of hypnotic.
